CAT HAIR LOSS

Hair loss in cats can be triggered off by many things.

Often it's due to something as simple as a reaction to a particular brand of cat food or if your cat is not getting the nutrition it requires.

If this is the cause of the problem it may simply require some modification of your pet's diet to solve the problem of hair or fur loss.

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, could also be down to poor grooming - some cats may lick themselves too much so watch out for a progression in hair loss on your pet's back, underbelly and inside its back legs.

However things are not always that simple and your cat or kitten's hair loss could be down to something more serious -

however, don't panic because most diseases or conditions can be dealt with successfully.

More significant causes for hair loss include mites, ticks or fleas, hormonal imbalance, allergies, ringworm or skin infections.

And your cat's hair or fur loss could even be down to psychological problems - if you think your cat may be stressed you should keep a diary to record the times of pronounced hair licking, biting or scratching.

Environmental factors can also be responsible for your cat losing hair - toxins in food and water are an obvious contributor, and other sources include everyday cleaning materials, pesticides and carpets.

Toxins can start to build up through time in your cat’s blood and eventually become

lodged in skin and organs which are responsible for cleansing the blood. So if your cat is losing hair as a result of a toxin-related problem it may need to undergo a process of detoxification.

If you think something significant may be causing the hair loss problem, it's advisable to take your cat along to the vet for an examination.

Your vet will look for evidence of parasites or fleas and may take blood tests or scrapings of skin. A process of elimination will begin to get to the root of the problem.

Depending on the diagnosis, your vet will have a range of options for dealing with the hair loss problem.

For example, a special protein and carbohydrate diet may be recommended for a set period of time, tablets or ointment may be prescribed, a skin lotion may be needed, hormonal therapy may be the solution, or anti-depressant medication my be prescribed if the problem is believed to be stress or anxiety related.
